The $200 Plan Keeps Its Price and Gets a Smaller Allowance

Grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers keep their old allowance through October 29, then move to a smaller one at the same $200 price.

Updated on October 27, 2026. Rewritten with a new headline and a shorter account of the same reporting. Corrected the same day: the opening said OpenAI's explanation was a single sentence; that is true of its help page, not of the longer post by Thibault Sottiaux quoted below.

You pay the same amount. But after October 29, grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers get less included usage for it, and OpenAI's help page explains why in a single line about efficiency.

OpenAI's help center, checked on October 27, 2026, confirms the mechanics. Grandfathering applies to anyone who had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026. Eligible customers can use the previous included allowance through October 29, 2026, while their Pro 200 subscription remains active. After that date, the subscription moves to the lower included usage allowance. The price stays at $200 a month (OpenAI Help Center).

The change arrived alongside a restructuring of the whole Pro line. OpenAI now sells three tiers: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and Pro 500 at $500. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100; Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three. Among Pro plans, Ultrafast—a faster service tier for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol—is included only with Pro 500, where it consumes included usage at eight times the Standard rate before drawing on credits at six times the Standard credit rate. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast (OpenAI Help Center). OpenAI's DevDay recap, published September 29, 2026, described Pro 500 as offering 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance (OpenAI DevDay Recap).

New Pro 200 subscriptions that are not eligible for grandfathering already receive the lower usage allowance. OpenAI attributes the reduction to "our increasingly efficient models" (OpenAI Help Center).

Thibault Sottiaux of OpenAI's Codex team, in a post on X published September 28, 2026, said the new Pro 200 usage calculation "will net out at half the dollar in API spend compared to the old Pro $200 plan." Sottiaux said OpenAI is committing to not reintroducing the five-hour usage window, and that the company does not want to inflate API list prices to make subscriptions look generous (Sottiaux on X).

Android Headlines reported on September 29, 2026, that OpenAI halved the Pro 200 allowance from 20 times Plus to 10 times and cut weekly GPT-6 Pro messages from 200 to 100; OpenAI has not confirmed those specific figures in its help documentation (Android Headlines).

The October 29 change is specific to Pro 200. The pricing page captured October 27 shows Free at $0, Go at $8, and Plus at $20 (chatgpt.com/pricing). Neither the pricing page nor OpenAI's help pages for Go and Plus mention an allowance reduction for those plans.

The editor of this publication, a Pro 200 subscriber, stated on October 27, 2026, that their account showed 62,500 credits remaining and confirmed receiving the one-time credit that Android Headlines reported existing subscribers would get (editor's statement). The one-time credit is not documented in OpenAI's help article.

The price held. The allowance shrank. After October 29 the grandfathered window closes for eligible subscribers, and the question stops being whether the change is coming and becomes whether the new number is enough.
